What is OnlyFans? What parents should know

What is OnlyFans?

OnlyFans, an online platform and app that was created in 2016, allows people to pay for content (photos, videos and live streams) through a monthly subscription. In order to make a living, YouTubers, fitness trainers and models create content.

What is the minimum age limit for OnlyFans?

Users must be at least 18 years old to use the OnlyFans policy.

What are the main concerns about OnlyFans'?

This British-based website is increasingly popular with people who are unemployed because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, it is also popular with sex workers.
Recent BBC documentary #Nudes4Sale examined the rise in explicit content being sold by under-18s on Not OnlyFans, but also Snapchat Premium and Twitter. According to Yoti 's facial analysis technology, found that as much as a third (33%) of Twitter users who advertise explicit images using hashtags "nudes4sale” or "buymynudes", are under 18. A large number of minors are using social media to sell nudes for gifts and money, which is worrying.

Twitter stated that it had: "Zero tolerance for any material that features, promotes child sexual exploitation," and requested "further details on the accounts found within the documentary that could have been linking"

Snapchat stated to the BBC that they strictly prohibit accounts that distribute or promote pornographic content. While we do not scan private accounts for content, we continue to look for ways to remove them, such as through discussions with other platforms, like Twitter.

What is the UK law?
The UK law requires that explicit content must be sold or distributed by someone over 18. There is currently no legal requirement that online platforms monitor explicit content that may have been created by underage users. If any action were taken, the creator and buyer of the content would be held criminally liable.

In the Online Safety Bill, May's new laws state that companies will be fined PS18m (or 10% of their global turnover) if they fail keep children safe on their platforms.

Are there safety measures in place for OnlyFans?
OnlyFans implemented a new account verification process in May 2019. A Creator must now provide a "selfie" along with their ID to verify their identity. Our research and the BBC's suggest that underage users have used IDs of others and created accounts without any problems.

OnlyFans stated that "We continually review our systems in order to ensure they remain as robust as possible." We will immediately investigate any account that is being used to gain or attempted to gain unlegitimate access.

A 17-year-old girl claims she signed up when she was 16. It took her many attempts to create a profile, even though it was shut down repeatedly. Even though they were not identical, she used an older friend's ID to create a profile and was able to use OnlyFans for seven month using different profiles.

The site recently required users to take a photo of themselves holding an ID card, and submit it to the site.

Why would teens want an OnlyFans Account?
Teens are encouraged to join the site as it is an easy way of making money. Some don't even need to be naked to make a lot of money from the site. It's tempting to believe that Creators could make up to PS30,000 per month. However, this is only a small fraction of Creators who actually make that much.

VoiceBox recently reported on OnlyFans and commissioned it by Parent Zone. It discusses why onlyFans is so popular among young people.

How to protect your child, and what to look out for
Recent reports have shown that children under 18 years old are using their passports to obtain fake IDs.
Users will need to register to receive payments from OnlyFans. However, reports indicate that payments can also be made through other providers such as Cash App (transfers of money via mobile). You should set up a parental lock, or disable/enable other settings to ensure your child has no easy access to their bank accounts.
Our most recent sexting report, Look at me - Teens and Sexting, Risks and Risks revealed that the probability of a child sending explicit images between the ages 14 and 15 is more than twice. It's vital to:

Have open conversations with them earlier about sharing explicit sexual content and the consequences thereof, e.g. sexual predators online, grooming, blackmail or even a crime in the police if they are the perpetrators of'revenge Porn'.

Allow users to set privacy controls for their devices.
